Developing competencies in health and well-Being education for training and teaching.
This pedagogical booklet presents a series of 15 lesson plans designed for learners aged 5 to 8, using an active pedagogical approach to support the development of health and well-being competencies, along with cross-disciplinary psychosocial skills such as communication, emotion management, and decision-making. Each lesson plan lasts 20 to 50 minutes. These lesson plans on health and well-being are designed to integrate easily into existing school curricula, regardless of the educational system. They can be used in a variety of subjects, including science, civic education, languages, arts, or physical education, depending on the topics covered and the priorities established by each country. Their flexibility enables teachers to adapt them to their respective subjects, either by integrating them directly into their lessons or using them to enrich and expand upon existing content. According to local educational preferences, these lessons can either replace certain sessions or serve as a support to deepen basic knowledge related to well-being, health, and psychosocial skills. They encourage a cross-disciplinary approach, enabling learners to approach these topics from different subject areas while developing essential competencies for their personal and social development. Without pretending to be exhaustive, the selection of topics provides a well-rounded coverage of the essential themes for effective health and well-being education. The lessons address physical, mental, and social health through three main axis:
• My Body and Me: learning to take care of oneself (hygiene, lifestyle habits, puberty, self-image, emotion management, and consent).
• Me and risk prevention: adopting good habits (disease prevention, reproductive health, safety, and risky behaviors).
• Me and my surroundings: interactions and environment (mental well-being, social relationships, violence prevention, environment and health). It should be noted that some themes are covered by several lessons —distinguished by a, b, c, etc.—as a single one is not sufficient to cover the subject.
In this case, it is recommended to do the lessons in the order suggested, as they are designed to gradually build up knowledge and skills. Each lesson follows a clear and consistent structure to facilitate its use:
• A title and a brief introduction explaining the purpose of the lesson. • The target age and estimated session duration.
• The methods and reSource required. • The Targeted competencies and skills and learning objectives.
• A detailed procedure in several steps: introduction, activity progress, synthesis, and assessment.
These lessons are designed to be used as they are or adapted according to the context and the needs of teachers. They provide a flexible and interactive framework, enabling learners to develop skills that will allow them to grow up healthy and fulfilled, both individually and in their interactions with others.
