Bringing Hope to Classrooms in Pakistan.

In the shadow of the world’s most formidable mountain ranges, where the sun glints off the crystalline waters of the Gilgit-Baltistan valleys, a young student in Chilas holds up two hand-drawn charts: The first chart depicts the "now": a landscape of conflict and deforestation. The second depicts a dream: "In the future, we want people sitting together peacefully with harmony and respect... we want to plant trees and take care of the environment". For this student, and thousands like them in the remote districts of Mohmand, Kohistan, Swat, Gupis-Yasin, Diamer, and Loralai, this isn't just an art competition it is a vision for a life they are finally beginning to access through the crackle of a radio.

Bridging the Great Divide

In these isolated regions, education is often a casualty of geography. Socio-economic barriers and a lack of physical infrastructure mean that for many, the "classroom" has remained an impossible dream.

UNESCO is contributing to bridge this gap with the "Radio Education: Promotion of Learning Through Radio in Isolated Areas of Pakistan" project funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS). This initiative is not designed to replace the traditional school building; rather, it is a strategic tool to combat the crisis of out-of-school children in areas where formal education is hardest to reach

Since its inception, the project has turned airwaves into a virtual campus, finalizing a comprehensive package of 140 radio lessons. These lessons are carefully balanced across three pillars: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), Global Citizenship (GCED) and Cultural Heritage. Between July and November 2025 alone, the project successfully aired 276 radio broadcast sessions, reaching isolated communities to provide equitable and culturally grounded learning with support from Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), ACTED, IBEX Productions, and provincial Education, Culture, Information, and Broadcasting Departments.

The human impact of these broadcasts is staggering. The project is currently reaching an estimated 75,000 community members, including 30,000 children between the ages of 5 and 14, through its wide-reaching broadcasts. This isn't just passive listening; it is active, community-wide engagement.

Beyond the Airwaves: Lessons for Life

The radio lessons are built on three pillars that transform how children see their world: Environmental Sustainability (ESD), Global Citizenship (GCED), and Cultural Heritage.

In Gupis-Yasin, a student’s drawing of a family cleaning their home together became a lesson in gender equality: "Keeping the home and environment clean is not just women’s work, it is everyone’s responsibility," they shared. In Swat, teachers are using the 140 radio lessons to ensure learning never stops, even when staff are absent.

"The training on ESD, GCED, and Cultural Heritage was completely new for us," explains a teacher from GPS Dangram Swat. "We are using them... we even took the children to visit the Swat Stupa—something the parents helped fund".

This sentiment is echoed by the Nazim of Odegram: "Our children come from very low-income families... These activities, planting and learning about their culture, are not usually available in government schools. We are grateful".

A Sustainable Future

This initiative is more than a broadcast; it is a community-wide transformation. From building school gardens and waste management systems in 20 model schools to training 250 educators, the program is weaving sustainability into the very fabric of these villages.

As the project extends toward April 2027, the goal remains to institutionalize radio education within provincial structures. For a child in a mud house in Yasin, who feels the "energy" of their heritage while listening to a broadcast, the radio is a reminder that they are not forgotten. They are connected to a world of peace, respect and green valleys—one frequency at a time.
